Why it Matters: The partnership highlights the growing convergence of banking and FinTech in cross-border payments and treasury management. By combining SMBC’s transaction banking capabilities with Ant International’s AI-native payments and treasury technology, the collaboration aims to improve payment efficiency, liquidity visibility and cash management for global businesses. It also reflects increasing demand for real-time, data-driven financial infrastructure across Asia’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ant International to strengthen cross-border payment services and explore new opportunities in treasury and liquidity management across Japan, Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The agreement reflects growing demand from businesses for more efficient cross-border transactions, streamlined cash management and enhanced treasury capabilities as global trade networks and supply chains become increasingly complex.

Under the partnership, SMBC will leverage its transaction banking expertise and international network to support Ant International’s business operations and cross-border transaction flows. The collaboration will focus on improving the efficiency, transparency and scalability of payment and treasury processes across the region.

Ant International provides AI-native solutions spanning payments, accounts, foreign exchange, treasury and business growth services. Its portfolio includes Alipay+, a cross-border mobile payment and digitalisation platform; Antom, a merchant payment and digitisation service; and WorldFirst, a global account and payment solution for businesses.

Through the agreement, SMBC will support Ant International in optimising cross-border payments and treasury management functions. The companies will also explore technical and business collaboration opportunities involving Whale RTP, Ant International’s real-time treasury and payment platform, and its potential integration with SMBC’s digital payment and transaction banking capabilities.

The collaboration is expected to enhance intercompany treasury management across Ant International’s global operations while improving liquidity management and payment efficiency.

As financial institutions and multinational businesses increasingly seek real-time payments and intelligent treasury solutions, the partnership aims to address growing demand for technology-driven transaction banking services that support international business expansion and operational efficiency.
