Republic of Sudan announces transition from cash to digital payments
By Pavithra R
The Republic of Sudan, as part of its vision to transform its economy, has announced a new commitment to accelerate the transition from cash to digital payments. The government, by joining the Better Than Cash Alliance, is reinforcing its commitment to enhancing financial inclusion and transparency by taking steps to build an economy that benefits all citizens.
The Better Than Cash Alliance is a partnership of governments, companies, and international organisations that accelerates the transition from cash to digital payments to drive inclusive growth.
Moving from cash to responsible digital payments is critical to the government’s economic recovery and reform strategy. The transition is vital for Sudan Family Support Program, which intends to provide monthly direct digital transfers to around 80% of Sudanese families. The Program seeks to impel economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve food security & health throughout the country.
“Digital payments will improve financial inclusion and transparency throughout Sudan’s vast territory, especially in conflict-affected regions, help stem corruption, and build a more direct link between citizens and the state. This digital transition will ensure equitable access to resources and government services, and revitalise the private sector, which are central to our efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace and revive the national economy,” said Dr Ibrahim Elbadawi, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.
The movement towards transitioning digital payments and modernising the financial sector will help Sudan enhance financial transparency as it reintegrates into the global financial system. By joining the Better Than Cash Alliance, the government aims to gain critical knowledge to navigate its journey towards payment digitisation through exchanges with other countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Through this initiative, the Government of Sudan will be joining the more than 75 members of the Better Than Cash Alliance.
