PhonePe, Visa jointly launches three new payment solutions
By Divya Shah
PhonePe and Visa have jointly launched three new payment solutions: Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay, and Smart Accept, expanding digital payment capabilities for consumers in India.
PhonePe becomes the first app in India to offer Cross Border Scan to Pay for international transactions. The company also becomes the first platform in the country to enable Visa’s three core consumer payment capabilities: online device tokenisation, tap to pay, and cross-border scan to pay.
The announcement builds on the Visa Device Tokenisation feature introduced on the PhonePe platform in February 2025. Together, the solutions are designed to create a cardless payment experience, allowing users who have tokenised their Visa cards on PhonePe to make in-store payments, online purchases, and international QR code payments without carrying physical cards.
Rahul Chari, Founder and CPTO at PhonePe, said, “By unifying online tokenisation, Tap to Pay, and Cross-Border QR payments alongside Smart Accept for merchants, we are removing friction across the entire payments value chain.”
The new offerings include Tap to Pay, which enables Android users to tokenise their Visa cards and make contactless payments at Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, including in low-connectivity environments. The feature will be rolled out in phases beginning September 9, 2026.
PhonePe and Visa also unveiled Cross Border Scan to Pay, which allows users to scan Visa-supported QR codes across 14 international markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, and South Korea.
The feature is intended to simplify payments for Indian travellers by eliminating currency exchange friction and is expected to be rolled out to users soon.
The companies highlighted that Unified Online Tokenisation is already integrated into the PhonePe platform, enabling a “save once, use everywhere” checkout experience across participating e-commerce merchants.
Additionally, the Smart Accept solution aims to help small merchants accept card payments directly on their smartphones without requiring separate POS hardware.
Customers can make payments using physical cards or tokenised mobile wallets by tapping against the merchant’s device. The solution also integrates card payments into PhonePe’s existing QR dashboard, enabling unified reconciliation and streamlined dispute resolution.
