Nexi launches Wero for eCommerce in Germany
By Aarav Garg

Nexi has rolled out Wero for eCommerce in Germany, marking an early commercial expansion of the European account-to-account payment scheme into online retail.
The PayTech said BAUR, Quelle and Bünting Group are among the first merchants preparing to offer Wero at checkout, with additional merchant launches expected in the coming weeks. BAUR and Quelle, part of BAUR-Gruppe, plan to integrate the payment option through their ComfortPay service.
Martina Weimert, CEO of the European Payments Initiative, said, “We are pleased to see Nexi is offering Wero as a payment method for their merchants in Germany. At the end of 2025 we announced Wero’s upcoming roll-out for online purchases, so this is an important next step in bringing a new account-to-account payment experience to a broader range of merchants and customers in the German market.”
The move positions Nexi Germany among the first acquirers enabling Wero for online merchants as the European Payments Initiative (EPI) looks to broaden adoption beyond peer-to-peer transfers.
Roberto Catanzaro, Chief Business Officer, Merchant Solutions at Nexi, and EPI Board Member, said, “The implementation of Wero for BAUR, Quelle and Bünting marks an important milestone for Nexi and for the development of a more sovereign and competitive European payments landscape. As a leading European PayTech, Nexi is committed to enabling payment solutions that expand choice for merchants and consumers while combining simplicity, speed and security.”
Wero is built on real-time bank transfers, allowing consumers to pay directly from their bank accounts rather than through cards or wallets. Supporters say the model can reduce processing costs, speed up settlement and strengthen European payments sovereignty by creating a regional alternative to global card schemes.
The service was initially launched for person-to-person payments and is now entering eCommerce, with point-of-sale acceptance planned in a later phase. Wero is currently available in Belgium, France and Germany, with further markets expected to follow gradually.
For merchants, the rollout could widen payment choice and provide access to instant account-based transactions through existing checkout journeys. For banks and payment providers, it represents a strategic push to retain a larger share of payments flows within European infrastructure.
Nexi said the German launch establishes the technical foundation for onboarding more merchants as demand builds. The company, one of Europe’s largest payment groups, has been expanding its role in next-generation digital payments and open banking-linked services across the region.
The latest rollout highlights increasing competition in European eCommerce payments, where providers are seeking lower-cost alternatives to cards while responding to regulatory and strategic calls for greater regional control over payments infrastructure.
