Meezan Bank completes payments infrastructure with BPC SmartVista
By Divya Shah
Why it matters: Meezan Bank’s migration highlights the growing need for scalable, real-time payment infrastructure as digital transaction volumes rise. For FinTechs, it demonstrates increasing demand for modern payment processing, fraud prevention, QR payments, merchant acquiring, and instant payment capabilities that can support millions of transactions while maintaining resilience and security.
Meezan Bank, Pakistan’s largest Islamic bank, has completed the end-to-end migration of its payments business to BPC’s SmartVista platform, strengthening the scalability, reliability, and security of its payments infrastructure.
The migration covers the bank’s entire payments ecosystem, including 7.5 million active cards, merchant acquiring operations, and the payments processing environment. The platform is designed to support peak transaction volumes exceeding 1,500 transactions per second, providing the capacity needed to support Meezan Bank’s growing digital payments business.
The modernised infrastructure supports the bank’s card portfolio, merchant acquiring services across point-of-sale (POS), e-commerce and QR payments, payment gateway services, fraud management capabilities, and instant payment processing.
Ali Imran Khan, Chief Information Officer at Meezan Bank, said, “This end-to-end payments migration is a major step in strengthening Meezan Bank’s digital payments infrastructure for the next phase of growth. We now have a modern platform that supports scale, security and innovation across our channels. The successful completion of this programme demonstrates that large-scale payments modernisation can be delivered with continuity, control and long-term value for our customers, merchants and the Bank.”
Meezan Bank currently processes approximately two million Raast transactions daily and supports an acceptance network of more than 100,000 QR codes across Pakistan. The bank said the new platform provides a stronger foundation for continued growth in cards, merchant acquiring, digital payments, and real-time transactions.
Faiz ur Rehman, Group Head of Information Technology at Meezan Bank, said, “Moving our payments ecosystem to a modern and scalable platform provides a strong foundation for the continued growth of cards, merchant acquiring, digital payments and Raast. This achievement reflects the strong collaboration between Meezan Bank’s business and technology teams and BPC, while maintaining operational continuity and resilience throughout the transformation.”
The migration establishes a unified payments infrastructure capable of supporting high transaction volumes while enabling the bank to expand secure digital payment services and enhance customer experiences.
Furrukh Ali-Baig, Managing Director Pakistan, Nepal & Iraq at BPC, said, “Meezan Bank operates one of Pakistan’s most significant digital payment environments, and this migration demonstrates how modern infrastructure can support scale, security and innovation while maintaining operational resilience. SmartVista provides the processing scale, fraud protection, instant payments capability and flexibility needed to support Meezan Bank’s continued expansion of secure digital payment services.”
The project reflects the growing focus among financial institutions on modernising payments infrastructure to support increasing transaction volumes, real-time payments, digital commerce, and advanced fraud management capabilities.
