Why it matters: The agreement highlights the continued shift toward SaaS-based core banking platforms among established financial institutions. By adopting Temenos’ cloud-native technology, Vancity can modernise critical banking operations, improve scalability and introduce new digital services more quickly.

Vancity, a values-based financial co-operative in Canada, has selected Temenos to modernise its core banking platform and support the next phase of its growth and digital transformation strategy.

Under the programme, Vancity will adopt a build-and-migrate approach, allowing the institution to introduce new digital banking capabilities while gradually transitioning existing operations to Temenos’ cloud-based platform. The phased strategy is designed to minimise disruption and ensure continuity for members and business operations throughout the migration process.

The transformation will cover Vancity’s core banking activities, including retail deposits, retail lending, corporate banking and payments. The deployment includes Temenos Core, Temenos Payments Hub and Temenos Data Hub.

The new platform will be delivered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and hosted on Microsoft Azure, providing Vancity with a scalable and resilient technology foundation that supports future innovation while simplifying technology management.

Wendy Murphy, Chief Technology Officer at Vancity, said, “Banking is changing, and the technology behind it needs to change too. Moving to Temenos SaaS represents a deliberate shift toward a simpler, more scalable technology foundation that can continuously evolve, allowing Vancity to innovate faster and respond to our members’ changing needs. It means we can spend less time managing complexity and more time investing in better banking experiences for our members.”

By modernising its banking infrastructure, Vancity aims to improve agility, accelerate the delivery of new services and create a more efficient operating environment that aligns with its sustainability and ESG objectives.

Brian DuVal, President, North America at Temenos, said, “Vancity is one of Canada’s most significant financial institutions with a broad and sophisticated banking operation. This program underscores how Temenos’ modern technology platform can help established financial institutions across North America move core banking operations to the cloud while supporting the breadth and complexity of their business.”

The deal reflects a broader trend among financial institutions seeking to replace ageing infrastructure with cloud-native banking platforms that can support evolving customer expectations, regulatory requirements and digital innovation initiatives.
