UnionPay, UPI, China, payments, FinTechUnionPay International and Italy-based NEXI have announced the extension of their partnership today. This enables the terminals in NEXI’s network to accept UnionPay cards, thus increasing UnionPay overall POS acceptance across Italy to around 90%.

The company also claims to be the first in Italy to activate UnionPay’s e-commerce with 3DS solution that helps online merchants to reduce risk and protect customers from payment fraud.

Wei Zhihong, UnionPay International’s Market Director and Head of its European Branch said, “We are delighted to be able to expand our footprint in Italy, which we believe will remain an attractive destination for tourists and business travellers alike when the country reopens to global travellers. Today’s achievement with Nexi, which importantly will utilise UnionPay’s e-commerce with new secure and frictionless 3DS solution, will help grow our acceptance to nearly 100% across the country enabling our cardholders to more easily and conveniently shop at a much greater number of Italian merchants as well as those online retailers.”

UnionPay’s 3DS enables the authentication of a transaction without customer intervention, thus creating a better payment experience and allowing the merchants to increase their conversion rates at online checkouts.

Italian PayTech NEXI offers an integrated end-to-end omnichannel technology that connects banks, merchants and consumers for enabling digital payments. It operates in three market areas including Merchant Services & Solutions, Cards & Digital Payments and Digital Banking Services.
