Britain’s SME underinsurance challenge is exposing a growing insurance knowledge gap

As the ABI warns more UK businesses are underinsured, insurance professionals are being urged to invest in continuous learning to keep pace with an increasingly complex commercial risk landscape.

The UK’s commercial insurance market is becoming increasingly complex, with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) warning that underinsurance among SMEs remains a significant and growing challenge. In its recent The SME Underinsurance Trap report, the ABI highlighted that many businesses continue to underestimate the value of their assets, overlook emerging risks and fail to review their cover regularly, leaving them financially exposed despite changing economic conditions.

According to Zing365, while underinsurance is often viewed as a customer issue, it also reflects the growing complexity facing insurance professionals responsible for advising businesses on the risks they face.

James Read, Managing Director at Zing365, commented, “Underinsurance is often viewed as a customer problem, but it’s increasingly becoming a professional knowledge challenge for the insurance industry. Business risks are evolving faster than ever, and brokers need ongoing access to high-quality learning if they’re to keep pace with changing exposures and provide advice that genuinely reflects the risks businesses face today.”

Commercial insurance has changed significantly in recent years. Alongside more traditional considerations such as property valuations and business interruption, brokers are now expected to advise on increasingly sophisticated risks, including cyberattacks, supply chain disruptions, climate resilience, evolving legislation and changing client operations. As these risks continue to evolve, technical knowledge cannot remain static.

For insurance professionals, this means continuous learning has become a commercial necessity rather than simply a compliance exercise. Developing a deeper understanding of emerging risks, policy wordings and sector-specific exposures enables brokers to ask better questions, identify potential gaps in cover and deliver advice that evolves alongside the businesses they support.

Read continued: “Good professional development isn’t about completing a course once a year. It’s about giving brokers regular access to practical, up-to-date learning that reflects how the commercial insurance market is changing. Whether it’s understanding emerging cyber risks, evolving policy wordings or sector-specific exposures, ongoing CPD helps insurance professionals ask better questions, have more informed conversations with clients and deliver advice with greater confidence.”

Read concluded, “Reducing underinsurance isn’t just about encouraging businesses to review their policies. It also depends on equipping the professionals advising them with the knowledge and confidence to identify changing risks and recommend protection that genuinely reflects today’s commercial environment. Firms that invest consistently in developing their people will ultimately deliver better outcomes for clients, strengthen trust and help raise standards across the commercial insurance market.”

As the insurance market continues to evolve, reducing underinsurance will require more than encouraging businesses to review their policies. It will depend on ensuring insurance professionals have the expertise, confidence and commercial understanding needed to recognise changing risks and provide advice that keeps pace with an increasingly complex business environment.
