FinTech platforms explore new ways to finance SMEs acquisitions across UK

Why it matters: FinTech providers are well positioned to address these needs by helping individuals access funding, manage businesses digitally and transition into ownership with greater confidence.
A growing number of Britons are rethinking traditional career paths as economic uncertainty, changing workplace dynamics and the rise of artificial intelligence reshape the employment landscape. New research suggests that entrepreneurship is increasingly being viewed as a viable alternative, presenting opportunities for the FinTech sector to address key barriers around funding, financial literacy and business support.
According to the latest Business Ownership Index by BusinessesForSale.com, 58% of non-business owners have seriously considered owning a business, while 54% believe entrepreneurship is not adequately supported in the UK. The findings come despite recent government efforts to encourage business creation and innovation.
The study highlights growing concerns about the stability of conventional careers. Around 60% of UK adults believe traditional career paths are less secure than they once were, while only 21% expect to spend their career with a single employer. Nearly one-quarter of respondents believe the traditional corporate career model is becoming obsolete.
Economic pressures are contributing to this shift. Three-quarters of respondents say wage growth has failed to keep pace with inflation, and more than half believe working for an employer limits their earning potential. As a result, business ownership is increasingly viewed as a route to greater financial control and long-term wealth creation.
For FinTech providers, these changing attitudes could translate into growing demand for digital financial tools that support entrepreneurship, including business banking, lending platforms, payment solutions, accounting technology and embedded finance services.
While entrepreneurial ambition remains strong, respondents identified several obstacles that prevent them from starting or acquiring a business. Access to finance, limited knowledge of ownership pathways and a lack of confidence were among the most common challenges.
These barriers represent significant opportunities for FinTech firms. Digital lenders, alternative credit providers, crowdfunding platforms and embedded finance solutions can help make business acquisition and startup funding more accessible, particularly for first-time entrepreneurs who may struggle to obtain traditional bank financing.
The research also revealed a notable knowledge gap. More than a third of UK adults were unaware that purchasing an existing business is an alternative to starting one from scratch. Acquiring an established business can offer immediate access to customers, operational infrastructure and revenue streams, potentially reducing some of the risks associated with new ventures.
Artificial intelligence emerged as another major factor influencing attitudes toward work. Nearly three-quarters of respondents believe AI threatens a significant number of jobs, while half expect the technology to replace substantial amounts of human work within the next decade.
As automation transforms industries, more workers may explore self-employment and business ownership as a means of maintaining career flexibility and financial independence. This trend could further increase demand for FinTech platforms that simplify business formation, financial management and access to capital.
The findings also indicate that many consumers increasingly view entrepreneurship alongside skilled trades as offering stronger long-term security than traditional office-based employment.
The research points to a growing entrepreneurial pipeline at a time when economic uncertainty and technological disruption are changing workforce expectations. However, ambition alone is unlikely to convert into business creation without accessible financial infrastructure.
For FinTech companies, this presents an opportunity to bridge the gap through digital lending, alternative credit models, AI-powered financial guidance, business acquisition financing and embedded banking solutions. Firms that can reduce friction in accessing capital and navigating business ownership may play a critical role in enabling the next generation of entrepreneurs.
As the UK seeks to strengthen economic growth and innovation, FinTech could become a key enabler of entrepreneurship, helping aspiring business owners move from intention to action.
