Nexi Group has extended its agreement with local and nationwide banks in Denmark to deliver SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) services, reflecting a broader push to strengthen cross-border payment integration across Europe.

Under the expanded arrangement, Nexi will provide the infrastructure and operational capabilities required for processing SDD collections, enabling Danish banks to participate more efficiently in the Single Euro Payments Area scheme. The move is intended to streamline access to European clearing systems while allowing banks to manage euro-denominated transactions through a shared, scalable platform.

The development highlights an ongoing structural shift within Europe’s payments landscape, where banks are increasingly outsourcing connectivity to pan-European schemes in favour of centralised, interoperable infrastructure. For smaller and regional institutions in particular, such partnerships reduce the operational burden of maintaining direct scheme access while ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory and technical standards.

Christian Segersven, Chief Business Officer, Issuing Solutions at Nexi Group, said the initiative reflects the growing complexity of payments ecosystems. “Payments today are part of a broader ecosystem spanning schemes, infrastructure and digital platforms. Through our collaboration, we are providing Danish banks with infrastructure that integrates with their existing payment environment and helps them remain relevant and competitive.”

From the perspective of participating institutions, the agreement is positioned as a way to future-proof payment capabilities. Søren Nicolaisen, CEO of National Banks and BOKIS, noted that access to a scalable international infrastructure would support secure and stable cross-border payment exchange within the SEPA framework, strengthening competitiveness.

The agreement builds on Nexi’s existing relationships with Danish banks across card and payment services, including support for international card schemes and the domestic Dankort network. Its expansion into SEPA Direct Debit infrastructure underscores the increasing importance of unified payment rails in enabling European financial institutions to compete in a more integrated and digital-first market.
