JCB Co., Ltd. has enabled contactless payments through Google Pay for cardholders of Union Bank of Taiwan and Bank SinoPac, marking the first deployment of this capability outside Japan.

The service, launched on 31 March 2026, allows JCB-branded credit card users in Taiwan to make contactless payments using Android-based smartphones and compatible devices via Google Pay. The rollout represents a step in JCB’s efforts to expand the usability of its contactless offering beyond its domestic market.

Google Pay enables users to tokenise their cards within the Google Wallet app and complete transactions using near-field communication (NFC) technology. The platform incorporates authentication protocols, encryption, and fraud protection mechanisms designed to secure transactions and user data.

The move reflects broader industry momentum toward mobile-first payment experiences in Asia-Pacific, where financial institutions and payment networks are accelerating partnerships with global wallet providers to meet rising consumer demand for digital and contactless transactions.

For JCB, the collaboration signals a strategic push to strengthen its international acceptance footprint and relevance in mobile payments. By integrating with a widely adopted digital wallet such as Google Pay, the company aims to enhance cardholder convenience while positioning itself more competitively against global card networks that have already established similar integrations across multiple markets.

For issuing banks including Union Bank of Taiwan and Bank SinoPac, the enablement supports efforts to modernise payment offerings and align with evolving consumer preferences for seamless, device-based transactions.

The Taiwan rollout could serve as a template for further international expansion of JCB’s contactless and mobile payment capabilities, particularly in markets where smartphone penetration and digital wallet adoption continue to grow.
