Cassava, Google unite to accelerate AI adoption in Africa
By Vriti Gothi

Cassava Technologies, a pan-African technology group, has partnered with Google to make Gemini, Google’s most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) platform, more widely accessible across the African continent.
This landmark collaboration combines Cassava’s extensive network of technology service providers with Google’s cutting-edge AI solutions to democratise access to digital intelligence tools, empowering millions of Africans to benefit from next-generation AI capabilities for learning, business, and creative innovation.
Under the partnership, two core initiatives have been introduced to eliminate the main barriers to AI adoption across Africa cost and data accessibility. Google will provide a six-month extended trial of its Google AI Plus plan, giving users expanded access to Gemini’s most powerful models, including Gemini 2.5 Pro, alongside 200 GB of cloud storage, video generation through Veo 3.1 Fast, and enhanced integration of Gemini in Gmail and Docs for improved productivity.
In addition, Cassava Technologies will leverage its continent-wide partner network to facilitate data-free access to the Gemini app, ensuring eligible users can engage with the platform without consuming mobile data. This initiative is designed to extend the reach of AI across diverse communities and sectors—bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusive innovation.
“We’re proud to partner with Google to democratise access to digital solutions that empower people and businesses. This partnership underscores a shared vision to make AI more inclusive, accessible, and impactful across Africa’s rapidly digitising economies. It’s about shaping a smarter, more connected, and more competitive Africa,” said Hardy Pemhiwa, President & Group CEO of Cassava Technologies.
“Our goal is to make Gemini helpful for everyone. By partnering with Cassava, we’re removing significant barriers to AI adoption across Africa specifically cost and connectivity. This collaboration should help bring the full potential of Gemini to millions of people, empowering them to learn, build, and create without worrying about data consumption,” added Josh Woodward, VP, Google Labs, Gemini, & AI Studio.
Through this initiative, individuals, enterprises, and institutions across Africa will gain access to Gemini’s premium features, including advanced research tools, AI-assisted video creation, higher limits for image generation, and smarter productivity enhancements through Google Workspace applications. These capabilities are designed to help businesses optimise operations, educators enhance digital learning, and creators unlock new forms of expression.
