Global InsurTech bolttech has acquired Kenya-based digital insurance platform mTek, strengthening its presence in Africa and expanding its embedded insurance capabilities across the region. The move marks a significant step in bolttech’s strategy to scale its technology-led insurance distribution model in high-growth emerging markets.

Founded in 2019, mTek enables Kenyan consumers to compare, buy, and manage insurance digitally through a paperless, mobile-first platform. The startup, which partners with insurers including GA Insurance, Sanlam, and Britam, has played a visible role in widening access to insurance in a market where penetration remains low. Earlier this year, mTek also teamed up with Mastercard to roll out embedded insurance solutions across East Africa a collaboration that highlighted growing demand for digital protection services in the region.

bolttech said the acquisition will allow it to combine mTek’s local expertise with its own global insurance and protection network, supporting broader deployment of embedded and digital insurance offerings. Africa has become an increasingly attractive frontier for global InsurTechs, driven by rising mobile adoption, regulatory support for digital distribution, and an underserved protection market.

“This represents an exciting step forward for bolttech as we expand our footprint in Africa,” said Stephan Tan, CEO, EMEA, bolttech. “mTek’s innovative platform and talented team share our vision of using technology to make protection more accessible. Together, we can accelerate digital transformation in insurance and extend the reach of embedded protection across the region.”

Bente Krogmann,CEO , mTek, said “The partnership positions the company to scale beyond its home market. Our technology, local insight, and commitment to inclusive insurance have transformed how customers access protection in Kenya, and this partnership allows us to scale that impact even further,” she said.

mTek’s leadership team will remain in place to oversee East African operations, ensuring continuity for customers and partners during the integration period. The company will rebrand at a later stage as part of its transition into the bolttech Group.

Both companies said they will work closely to ensure a smooth integration for employees, customers, and ecosystem partners.
