What this means: The findings note the growing importance of FX technology and risk-management solutions. As currency movements become more difficult to predict, FinTech providers have an opportunity to help businesses manage volatility through real-time treasury platforms, hedging tools, automated risk monitoring, and cross-border payment solutions.

Key Takeaways

  • Rising AI investment and government borrowing are increasing competition for capital and influencing global currency markets.
  • Geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and energy shocks are creating greater FX volatility for businesses.
  • FinTech firms that offer advanced FX risk management and cross-border payment capabilities stand to benefit from growing demand for currency protection solutions.

New research from a global payments company Convera highlights growing uncertainty in global currency markets and warns businesses to prepare for a wider range of foreign exchange (FX) outcomes in 2027. The research, Are You Ready for 2027?, highlights that shifting economic conditions, geopolitical risks, government debt, and rising AI investment are making currency movements harder to predict.

For FinTech firms, payment providers, digital banks, and cross-border commerce platforms, this changing environment could create both risks and opportunities. As businesses expand internationally, effective FX risk management is becoming a critical capability rather than just a treasury function.

According to the research, one of the biggest forces influencing global markets is the growing competition for capital. Governments are borrowing heavily while companies continue to invest aggressively in artificial intelligence.

US federal debt has surpassed $40 trillion, with interest payments now exceeding defence spending. At the same time, global AI-related investment crossed $1 trillion in 2026, increasing demand for funding and global savings.

Convera says these trends could keep borrowing costs elevated and create uncertainty around inflation and interest rates. For FinTech companies that depend on investment funding, lending activities, or international transactions, higher capital costs may influence future growth strategies.

The research expects global economic growth to improve slightly to around 3% in 2027, while global inflation is forecast to decline from 4.5% to 3.7%. However, interest rates are unlikely to return to the very low levels seen before the pandemic.

Despite improving economic conditions, several risk factors continue to threaten stability. Geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, and climate-related disruptions are reshaping global trade routes and increasing supply-chain costs.

Convera highlights the 2026 disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed up energy prices and increased currency volatility. The research also points to the potential economic impact of a China-Taiwan conflict, which could affect global trade and financial markets.
