Why it matters: The launch reflects growing demand for modular, cloud-based trade finance technology. For FinTechs, it highlights opportunities in digitising traditionally manual banking processes, particularly in trade and commercial finance. It also underscores the shift toward SaaS delivery models that help smaller financial institutions access advanced capabilities without major infrastructure investments.

Finastra has launched Finastra StandbyX, a cloud-enabled solution designed to help U.S. banks digitise and automate standby letter of credit (SBLC) processing while improving risk management and operational efficiency.

SBLCs remain widely used across trade and non-trade transactions in the U.S. Although large financial institutions often manage these instruments through comprehensive trade finance platforms, many regional and mid-sized banks continue to rely on manual or semi-manual processes, creating operational inefficiencies and limiting scalability.

Finastra said StandbyX was purpose-built to address these challenges by providing banks with a dedicated solution for SBLC processing without the need to deploy a full trade finance platform.

Delivered through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, the solution is designed for rapid implementation and requires minimal integration and testing efforts, helping banks modernise operations while maintaining a competitive total cost of ownership.

The platform leverages the standby letter of credit capabilities from Finastra’s Trade Innovation platform, which is used by more than 150 banks globally. Through StandbyX, institutions can digitise workflows, strengthen operational controls, and improve risk oversight while reducing dependence on manual processes.

The solution is particularly suited to banks with low-to-moderate SBLC transaction volumes that require a streamlined approach to trade finance digitisation.

Key features of StandbyX include cloud-based deployment, simplified implementation, reduced operational complexity, and access to Finastra’s trade finance technology and banking expertise. The platform is also designed to support faster time-to-value by enabling institutions to begin using the solution without undertaking large-scale transformation projects.

Vinay Mendonca, Head of Trade and Supply Chain Finance and Corporate Channels at Finastra, said, “Finastra StandbyX gives banks access to proven SaaS technology that digitises SBLC processing without the need to deploy a full trade finance platform. By making trade finance technology more accessible, we are helping a broader range of institutions improve operational efficiency, strengthen controls, and deliver a better customer experience. This is an exciting step in the evolution of our trade proposition.”

StandbyX builds on the capabilities of Trade Innovation, Finastra’s trade finance platform that enables financial institutions to automate workflows, manage risk, and improve operational efficiency. The launch also supports the company’s broader strategy of delivering modular, cloud-based, and API-first solutions that make digital trade finance tools accessible to a wider range of banks.
