Bank of Maldives (BML) has selected Finastra’s Essence core banking platform to modernise its banking infrastructure as part of its long-term digital transformation strategy. The implementation has aimed to improve operational efficiency, accelerate product innovation and strengthen customer experience across the bank’s conventional and Islamic banking services.

Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, said: “Our partnership with Finastra Essence represents a pivotal step in our digital transformation journey, providing the agile, future-ready foundation we need to accelerate innovation, drive operational excellence, and expand our ability to deliver world-class financial services.”

The agreement has provided BML with a modern, open and flexible platform designed to support faster product launches, increased automation and streamlined straight-through processing. The platform has also enabled relationship managers to respond more effectively to evolving customer requirements while supporting the continued delivery of both conventional and Shariah-compliant banking products.

The modernisation initiative forms part of the bank’s broader strategy to strengthen its technology foundation and enhance digital capabilities as demand for seamless banking services continues to grow across the Maldives.

Siobhan Byron, Executive Vice President of Universal Banking at Finastra, said: “The selection of Finastra Essence reflects the strength of our open, flexible core banking platform and our ability to help financial institutions innovate at pace, while maintaining resilience and operational excellence.”

According to Finastra, Bank of Maldives selected Essence following an evaluation of its functionality, technology architecture, platform flexibility, delivery capabilities and market reputation.

The deployment has reflected the continued investment by banks across the Asia-Pacific region in next-generation core banking platforms to simplify operations, shorten product development cycles and support digital-first customer engagement. It has also reinforced Finastra’s presence in the regional banking technology market as financial institutions continue replacing legacy core systems with more agile, cloud-ready platforms.
