OpenLegacy has launched a new platform aimed at helping enterprises modernise legacy systems without operational disruption, reflecting growing industry demand for incremental approaches to mainframe transformation.

The company introduced OpenLegacy Hub, a platform built on and integrated with Amazon Web Services (AWS), designed to enable organisations to modernise mainframe and legacy applications gradually while maintaining continuous system availability. The solution allows legacy and cloud environments to run in parallel, reducing the operational risks typically associated with large-scale migration projects.

For many enterprises—particularly in sectors such as banking, insurance, and telecommunications—mainframes continue to run mission-critical workloads. However, maintaining these systems can be costly and complex, while full-scale migrations have historically been high-risk and resource-intensive. As organisations increasingly pursue AI and cloud-native strategies, modernising legacy infrastructure has become a key strategic priority.

OpenLegacy Hub is intended to address this challenge by enabling incremental migration of core business logic from legacy technologies such as COBOL, CICS, IMS, VSAM, RPG, and IBM-i into cloud-native services. These include AWS tools such as AWS Lambda, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service, Amazon Bedrock, and the AWS mainframe transformation framework.

The platform exposes legacy data and functionality as secure APIs and event-driven services, allowing enterprises to integrate existing systems with modern cloud applications and AI services. According to the company, this approach allows organisations to test and validate migrated workloads in live environments, reducing migration risk while delivering incremental business value.

The solution will be available through the AWS Marketplace, expanding access for organisations already operating within the AWS ecosystem. It is also expected to integrate with AWS tools designed for mainframe transformation, further aligning with enterprises’ cloud migration strategies.

Industry observers note that incremental modernisation models are gaining traction as organisations seek to reduce technical debt while preparing legacy systems for integration with AI, data analytics, and digital platforms. For regulated industries, where reliability and compliance requirements are particularly stringent, approaches that enable gradual transition without service disruption are increasingly seen as a pragmatic alternative to large-scale replacement programmes.
