eBay partners with TrueLayer to launch pay by bank in UK
By Vriti Gothi

Global marketplace eBay has partnered with open banking payments provider TrueLayer to introduce Pay by Bank at checkout for its UK customers, enabling direct account-to-account payments authorised through bank apps.
The integration allows buyers to pay instantly from their bank accounts without entering card details. Transactions are authenticated using bank-grade security, with customer login credentials neither shared with nor stored by eBay, while TrueLayer manages the secure bank connectivity and payment processing.
The rollout brings real-time, account-to-account payments to millions of UK users as eCommerce platforms increasingly expand alternatives to card-based transactions. Pay by Bank is positioned alongside existing options on eBay, including credit and debit cards, buy now, pay later (BNPL), and digital wallets. Eligible purchases remain covered under eBay’s Money Back Guarantee at no additional cost.
Francesco Simoneschi, CEO and co-founder of TrueLayer, said the partnership embeds Pay by Bank into everyday commerce at scale. “By integrating directly into eBay’s checkout, we’re enabling instant, bank-authenticated payments that allow merchants to benefit from a faster and more streamlined payment experience. This is another step towards a real-time payments ecosystem that aligns with modern consumer expectations.”
Avritti Khandurie Mittal, Vice President of Product for eBay Services, added that the move supports the company’s broader strategy to diversify its payment mix. “Pay by Bank represents an important step in expanding choice with a secure, real-time way for buyers to pay directly from their bank accounts.”
The partnership also includes a strategic investment in TrueLayer by eBay Ventures, signaling a deeper commercial alignment as the marketplace explores next-generation payment infrastructure.
The development reflects growing momentum for open banking-based payments across Europe, where merchants are seeking faster settlement, lower processing costs, and reduced reliance on card networks. As real-time payment adoption accelerates, large-scale merchant integrations such as this are expected to play a key role in mainstreaming Pay by Bank within digital commerce.
