Splitwise has partnered with Tink, a Visa Solution, to bring Pay by Bank to users in France, Germany, and Austria. Splitwise’s European growth strategy underscores both companies’ commitment to driving digital transformation and seamless financial experiences through open banking technology.

Following the strong uptake of Pay by Bank in the UK, where Splitwise has recorded a 150% increase in Tink account checks and payment initiations (PIS) this year, the expansion enables millions of new users across Europe to send and receive money instantly and securely all within the Splitwise app.

The launch comes amid rapid global adoption of open banking, with Juniper Research projecting more than 645 million open banking users worldwide by 2029, up from 183 million in 2025. This growth reflects a broader shift towards data-driven, customer-centric financial ecosystems that prioritise transparency, security, and convenience.

Before integrating with Tink, Splitwise users were required to leave the app and initiate payments manually through their online banking platforms. The introduction of Pay by Bank streamlines this process, allowing users in the newly added markets to link their bank account and complete payments in just a few clicks, powered by Tink’s secure open banking infrastructure.

Pay by Bank leverages account-to-account (A2A) payment technology to deliver a frictionless digital payment journey. Users can authenticate payments directly from their bank accounts without data entry or redirection, enhancing both user trust and payment efficiency.

Jonathan Bittner, CEO and Co-Founder of Splitwise, commented, “We pride ourselves in making the Splitwise user experience as secure and direct as possible. With Tink’s open banking technology, we are able to do just that. And after the success of the partnership in the UK, I’m thrilled that we can bring this feature to our users in France, Germany, and Austria.”

Ian Morrin, Head of Payments at Tink, added, “Splitwise is a useful tool for users to take control of their finances, and a convenient way for consumers to manage their money and stay on top of who owes whom what. We’ve had a great response in the UK after partnering last year, increasing the number of Tink account checks and PIS transactions on the app by 150% since the start of this year. We are excited to build on that working relationship with Splitwise by expanding into more markets across Europe.”
