The payment landscape across the globe has witnessed dynamic growth and rapid innovations. While the spotlight has been mostly on retail payments, in the last few years, several developments have taken place in the middle office that has significantly reshaped the payment processes and changed the entire landscape. This covers developments
such as the introduction of real-time gross settlement (RTGS) that decreased the credit risk from wholesale ayments, the introduction of multicurrency functionality in the system, and opening access to nonbanks to improve the interoperability of systems. In addition, payment market infrastructure providers have also been modernizing to build real-time payment infrastructure to reduce friction in domestic and global transactions.
