London-based Masabi, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider of ticketing and payments to public transport launched Justride Validator – a multi-format ticket validation device for buses and trams, so passengers can simply tap a contactless payment card, linked smartcard or mobile device to travel, without needing to purchase a ticket. The device will be on show at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm and is deemed to make Account Based Ticketing (ABT) affordable for transport authorities.

Justride Validator is built with capabilities of being able to handle the demand of account-based ticketing for transit population of any size and is able to support all major ticketing formats including paper and mobile barcodes, contactless bank cards (cEMV) and smartcards (NFC), as well as Bluetooth.

The company also plans on future integrations with transport service providers Uber, Transit, Jorudan and Keolis.

“Ticketing using contactless bank cards and smart devices – it’s what passengers are expecting and what transport providers are demanding. However, the reality is that the hardware requirements have made it cost-prohibitive for many transit authorities around the globe. By failing to make tap and ride ticketing accessible to all transport agencies, the industry has been failing passengers,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “Through combining our SaaS approach, together with this innovative affordable hardware, we are fundamentally changing the economics of Account Based Ticketing, opening it up to cities and transport authorities of any size and budget.”

The delivery model for the product would be on-site with a pole-mounted validation solution with the ease of installation and maintenance.

It has been designed to meet accessibility standards, including US Americans with Disabilities Act. It also comes with features such as built-in GPS and cellular connectivity, vehicle-wide and network-wide pass-back protection. When passengers board their chosen mode of transit they simply tap their appropriate fare media, be that a pre-purchased ticket or account-based token.
